Territorial Skills Competition

The Territorial Skills Competition is an annual multi-trade and technology skills competition. This exciting event is a celebration of the incredible craftsmanship, innovation, and dedication to excellence that Skills Canada Yukon promotes year-round. Competing provides you with an opportunity to test your skills against local secondary students and apprentices.

Competing creates connection to community members and buisness owners who work in your chosen skill area. Competing at the territorial level gives you the potential of competeing at the Skills Competences Canada National Competition against secondary students and apprentices from across Canada! In 2026, the competition will be held on May 28th and 29th in Toronto, Ontario.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can compete?

Secondary level competitors must meet the following criteria in the current school year and may be asked to provide proof of any points listed below:

  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents (landed immigrants), protected persons and international students have the right to compete. Competitors are responsible for verifying this information, if requested.
  • Be between 13 and 21 years of age on January 1 of the year of the Competition. Competitors are responsible for verifying this information, if requested.
  • Be registered in a recognized secondary institute, or be enrolled in a registered home school program.
  • Have completed and submitted a signed release form by a parent or guardian if under the age of 19.

Post-Secondary competitors must meet the following criteria in the current school year and may be asked to provide proof of any points listed below:

  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents (landed immigrants), protected persons and international students have the right to compete. Competitors are responsible for verifying this information, if requested.
  • Be enrolled in a college to training institution OR be a registered apprentice with a provincial or territorial apprenticeship authority.  
  • The competitor cannot be a certified journey-person in the trade in which they are competing in.
  • Have completed and submitted a signed release form.

Non-apprenticeable skills:

  • A competitor must be a registered student with a training institution in a related program in the skill in which they wish to compete at any time between July 1st of the previous year of the SCNC and the start of the SCNC. Competitors are responsible for verifying this information, if requested.

Apprenticeable skills:

  • A competitor must be registered in a related program, pre-apprenticeship program or be a registered apprentice in the trade (skill) in which they wish to compete at any time between July 1st of the previous year of the SCNC and the start date of the SCNC. Please refer to the list of Trades Designated in the Yukon.
  • Competitors must not be a certified journeyperson prior to May 1st of the SCNC year, in the skill area in which they wish to compete. SCC’s definition of a certified journeyperson is someone who has received one or more of the following from their Provincial/Territorial Issuing Authority: 
    • Journeyman Certificate 
    • Certificate of Qualification 
    • Confirmation of Apprentice Completion Letter 
    • Completion Letter 
    • Or any other documentation confirming completion of an apprenticeable skill

How do I register?

Registration is completed online through the Skills Canada Yukon website. Registration for the 2026 Territorial Skills Competition will be open from February 1st to February 28th, 2026.

*Please note: Late registrations may be accepted on a first-come-first-serve basis, dependent on availability.

I don't live in Whitehorse. Can I still compete?

We strongly encourage competitors from the communities to register. Please contact us to discuss your travel logistics as we may be able to assist in travel expenses for mileage and hotel acommodations.

How can I best prepare for the competition?
  • A "getting ready" guide will be sent in your registration confirmation package.
  • Be sure to closesly review what you are responsible for bringing to the competition.
  • Practice!
  • Arrive early to orientation on the day of competition.
What if I don't have the required equipment or tools?

Some contests require competitors to bring personal tools or equipment. This will be clearly listed in the contest description document. If you are unable to provide the specified materials, please ask your teachers or contact our team for support in acquiring the necessary equipment or tools.

How are winners selected?

Competitors are evaluated by industry judges using standardized scoring criteria based on technical skill, accuracy, safety, and professionalism.

Gold medal winners may qualify to represent Yukon at the Skills Canada National Competition. Medals, certificates, and additional prizes may also be awarded.

What if I have accessibility or accommodation needs?

SCY is committed to providing a barrier-free environment which allows everyone to participate in our programs and competitions. We strive to be fully inclusive to all manner of disabilities and identities. SCY provides the opportunity for any competitor to disclose a disability on our competition registration form. Requests for accommodations must be made at least 4 weeks prior to the competition date. Requests should be indicated on the registration form and sent to yukon@skillscanada.com. Accommodations are customized and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis between the SCY staff and the TTC or NTC member.
