Skills and Knowledge Assessment
The purpose of the competition is to evaluate each competitor’s ability to demonstrate and fully communicate the process of the job skill. Competitors will offer a 20-30 minute demonstration that MUST reflect a contest area that is a component of the Canadian, Territorial or Provincial Skills Competitions. Each competitor must prepare for the Job Skill Demonstration by:
- Submitting the detailed Health and Safety Plan which includes a step-by-step description of the demonstration, along with a Safety Data Sheet/s (SDS) if applicable.
- Identifying the skill being demonstrated and the relationship of that skill to the specific contest area.
- Preparing a 20–30-minute demonstration of a skill.
- Following the competition judging criteria provided in the contest description document.
- Introducing the Skills for Success, identifying and elaborating on them throughout the competition.
Some examples of job skills that may be demonstrated include but are not limited to the following:
- Outdoor Recreation and Power Equipment - Servicing small engines
- Electrical Installations - Installing a light and switch
- Plumbing - Soldering copper tubing
- Video Production - Creating a visual element for a video production
- Aesthetics - Performing a dry manicure
- Hairstyling - Creating an updo
- Baking - Icing and decorating a cupcake
- Cooking - Proper knife handling skills
- Web Technologies - Constructing a webpage
- Mechanical Engineering CAD – Designing an item for 3D printing
