Yukon apprenticeship on the rise!

Record Number of Apprentices Registered in Yukon

WHITEHORSE - The number of registered apprentices in Yukon has increased 80 per cent over the past four years, Education Minister Patrick Rouble announced.

As of June 30 there were 405 registered apprentices, up from 354 at the same time last year and the 225 apprentices that were in Yukon in June of 2004.

“The government is dedicated to increasing the number of apprentices and skilled workers in the territory and training Yukoners for Yukon opportunities,” said Rouble. “That’s why we’re making significant investments in post-secondary education and in initiatives such as Skills Canada-Yukon, Women in Trades and Technology and other programs that help us meet our needs.”

“The Yukon business community should be applauded for their efforts and dedication in developing the workforce and for their support of Yukon apprentices,” added Rouble.  “When employers supervise an apprentice they are investing in a skilled workforce for the future.”

Apprenticeship in Yukon is a voluntary system based on a significant commitment by employers, the will of the apprentices and support by the government.

Advanced Education actively promotes Yukon apprenticeship and trades qualification programs through ad campaigns, participation in career and trade fairs, presentations to secondary schools and college students, and consultation with First Nations and employers.

As part of its commitment to increasing skilled trades capacity, Yukon government also employs its own apprentices.
