Yukon College and Skills Canada Yukon partner to promote trades
February 14, 2008
Whitehorse - Yukon College and Skills Canada Yukon signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Friday afternoon, inaugurating what is expected to be a lasting, active partnership in the promotion of trades and technologies. The Honourable Larry Bagnell and Minister Rouble were on hand to witness the event in a packed college boardroom.
"Yukon College has been building relationships with a range of community based organizations, in order to be able to reach out to Yukoners and to support them in their educational pursuits," says Terry Weninger, Yukon College President. "Skills Canada Yukon and Yukon College share several areas of common interest and it makes sense that we should work together to the benefit of all Yukoners."
"We are really excited about this opportunity to partner with Yukon College," says Dan Curtis, Director at Skills Canada Yukon. "This new relationship will help us continue to address the needs of Yukoners, as we support trades and technology through a variety of avenues."
The agreement commits both parties to work together on several fronts: they will promote an awareness of the trade and technical careers available as a first choice career option for Yukoners; and they will cooperate in the use of facilities, thus enabling trades and technology programming the space with which to grow and thrive.
In addition, Yukon College and Skills Canada Yukon will work together to select and train the best candidates for Skills Canada competitions. Yukon College will host this year's competition, to be held on April 4, highlighting the College's investment in the success of this partnership and on its continued growth.
"The signing of this Memorandum represents increased opportunities for the Yukon Territory", asserts Clarence Timmons, Yukon College Board Chair. "As a team - bringing together a community organization and the territory's education provider - we are able to provide many more opportunities for the expansion and development of trades and technologies."
